In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Florence, EWG and the Waterkeeper Alliance set out to survey the storms impact on poorly located factory farms littered throughout North Carolina’s Atlantic Coast. The assessment was primarily focused on areas along the Neuse, Cape Fear and Black Rivers and occurred between September 17th and the 21st. Using aerial photography and high resolution satellite imagery analysts were able to document how widespread flooding impacted over 95 swine and poultry facilities, releasing animal waste into the surrounding area.
