EWG Calls on Congressional Leadership to Oppose Shortsighted Renewable Fuel Standards Proposal

WASHINGTON, December 5, 2007 - Today, the Environmental Working Group sent the attached letter to Congressional leadership expressing opposition to the reported Renewable Fuels package in the Energy Bill. “While the proposed Renewable Fuel Standard does address the pressing need for dramatic reductions in green house gas emissions, it does little to address the environmental impacts of the current RFS, let alone the potentially catastrophic environmental consequences of increasing renewable fuel production fivefold,” said Sandra Schubert, EWG’s Director of Government Affairs. “There is no reason why we can’t balance renewable fuel production with sound environmental protections,” Schubert added.
