Environmental Working Group's Healthy Living Tips: Cosmetics

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Ever looked at the labels on your shampoos, moisturizers and cosmetics? Do you really know what chemicals you're putting on your body?

EWG scientist Nneka Leiba explains some helpful tips on what to watch out for before you buy.

Most Americans use about 10 personal care products a day. And they think that the government is making sure these products are safe -- but the scary truth is, it's not. That's why Environmental Working Group scientists have put together easy-to-use tips on how to read labels on personal care products.

Losing Ground (3 minute version)

Losing Ground (3 minute version)

Bad federal policy and intensifying storms are washing away the rich dark soils in the Midwest that made this country an agricultural powerhouse and that remain the essential foundation of a healthy and sustainable food system in the future. The Environmental Working Group produced this short film with Atlas Films that provides stark images illustrating how federal farm subsidies and ethanol mandates, piled on top of skyrocketing crop prices are supporting an intensive monoculture that kneecaps any hope for a more resilient and diverse food and farm system.

Trust Monsanto, DuPont and Bayer?

Trust Monsanto, DuPont and Bayer?

Americans eat their weight yearly in genetically engineered food, some of it created by companies financing the campaign against Proposition 37.

Some of these chemical giants have been accused of hiding toxic pollution that has poisoned communities and the environment. Now we are being asked to trust these companies to let us know if genetically engineered ingredients are safe. There has been no government health testing or long term monitoring of the health effects of genetically modified foods, only studies performed by GMO seed companies. If genetically engineered ingredients are good for you, why do these companies want to keep you in the dark? You have a right to know what's in the food you buy so that you can make the decision for yourself.

Some companies are spending millions to kill Proposition 37, objecting that labeling a product "genetically engineered" is deceptive. It doesn't make sense.

Bug Zapper in Every Bite

Bug Zapper in Every Bite

Syngenta's billboard -- "Turn every seed into a bug zapper" -- exhorts farmers to buy its seed corn, engineered with a bacterium gene that kills pests.

Syngenta has genetically engineered its trademark BT corn with implants of the Cry1Ab gene from the Bacillus thuringiensis, which produces a protein that kills corn borers. The agribusiness giant claims its invention poses no harm to the health of humans and other "non target animals." Yet independent scientists have not tested this claim with long-term research. Some shorter-term studies may indicate a risk to human health Walmart and other retailers have begun to sell a sweet BT corn. Consumers won't spot it because there is no labeling requirement. Don't you want to know if you're eating a bug zapper? If genetically engineered ingredients are in your food, you have a right to know when you buy it.
