Reform Bill Paves the Way for Cleaner Biofuels

Bipartisan legislation introduced today to eliminate the federal requirement to blend corn ethanol into gasoline would pave the way for cleaner biofuels, said Environmental Working Group Vice President for Government Affairs Scott Faber.

The Renewable Fuel Standard Reform Act was introduced by Reps. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Jim Costa (D-Calif.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and Steve Womack (R-Ark.). The bill would repeal a mandate that currently requires that up to 15 billion gallons of corn-based ethanol be blended annually into gasoline under a biofuels program known as the Renewable Fuel Standard.

“The RFS Reform Act makes much-needed room in the fuel pool for advanced alternatives that actually lower greenhouse gas emissions and do not compete with our food needs,” said Faber. “In doing so, it helps ensure a cleaner energy future that benefits both consumers and the environment.”
