Tonight: EWG’s Ken Cook to Debate GMO Labeling Initiative at Commonwealth Club

San Francisco, Calif. – Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group, will join other experts at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club at 6 p.m. tonight for a debate on California ballot initiative Proposition 37, to require a label for foods made with genetically engineered ingredients. Tickets are still available.

“While the polls have tightened, because pesticide companies and industrial food producers are spending $1 million a day on television ads, when you ask folks if they think genetically engineered foods should come with a simple label, the vast majority say yes,” said Cook, a Bay Area resident. “Most consumers like to have more information rather than less, and that’s true when it comes to what’s in the foods they buy and feed to their families. But the multi-national chemical and food companies bankrolling the effort to stop Prop 37 would rather leave shoppers in the dark when it comes to GE foods.”

The biggest backers of the No On 37 campaign are pesticide and chemical companies that have a long history of polluting whole communities, hiding information about toxic spills and paying hundreds of millions in fines for their misdeeds. Now these same companies are working (and spending) overtime to make sure Californians continue to eat their genetically engineered foods without ever knowing.

The event is open to the public. Admission for non-members of the Commonwealth Club is $20. You can buy tickets online here:

Cook will be joined by Jessica Lundberg of Lundberg Family Farms, Dr. Kent Bradford of the Seed Biotechnology Center at the University of California - Davis, and Jesus Arredondo, founder of Advantage Government Consulting.
